Rose looks in stunning form as he prepares for the US Open at Pebble Beach

England's Justin Rose secured his first title on American soil after a stunning final-round 66 gave him victory at the Memorial Tournament in Ohio.

Rose, 29, overturned an overnight four-shot deficit to beat American Rickie Fowler, who had led for three days, by three shots with an 18-under-par total.

Six birdies in a bogey-free final round provided the perfect preparation for the US Open starting on 17 June.

Bo Van Pelt and Ricky Barnes were third and fourth, while Tiger Woods was 19th.

Woods, Memorial defending champion and in his last start before the US Open at Pebble Beach, finished his week with a 72 and a six-under total.

Having first hit the golfing headlines as a 17-year-old amateur with a fourth at the 1998 British Open, Rose has gone on to win five titles around the world.

His first PGA title on Sunday at Muirfield Village arrived on his 162nd tournament tour appearance in the US.

"I couldn't wish for a better place - it's an honour," Rose told tournament host Jack Nicklaus after holing the winning putt.

"I have had a few close calls and sometimes you wonder why you can't get it done. But when you do it feels easy. It's nice to have the hard work pay off."

The South Africa-born player is now the third European to win in the US this season after Ian Poulter's success at the WGC-Accenture Match Play and Rory McIlroy's Quail Hollow Championship victory.

Fowler, 21, led the tournament in a three-way tie with Rose after a first-round 65, and looked favourite to land his maiden title with rounds of 66 and 69 to lead by four going into the last day.

The American, though, bogeyed the 10th and went in the water on the short 12th for a double-bogey five and Rose slowly took control, before coming through strongly with six birdies.

Rose, 66th in the world, will now move up to just outside the top 30, and victory lifts him from 27th to eighth on the European Ryder Cup world points list.
