Golf Holidays in Costa de la Luz

The Costa de la Luz (literally the coast of light) is the western part of the Andalucia coastline that faces out to the Atlantic. Far less developed than the neighbouring and well known holiday destination, Costa de Sol, the Costa de la Luz is especially noted for the beauty of its protected natural reserves and a number of first-rate natural attractions.

Among them are the Doñana National Park, where endangered species, such as the Spanish Imperial Eagle and the Iberian Lynx can occasionally be sighted, and the sprawling wetlands where there is a profusion of water fowl and, in season, other migratory birds, including storks and flamingos.

The mixture of historic towns, sedate resorts and wonderful long, wild stretches of surf-slapped, dune-backed sand – all bathed in the extraordinary light that gave the coast its name – makes for an outstanding destination for golfing holidays in Spain.

Stretching from Tarifa, popular amongst wind surfers and surfboarders, to the historic and cultural city of Cadiz and beyond to the Portuguese border, the Costa del la Luz is perhaps one of Spain’s best kept secrets. The strong Levante wind from the Atlantic affords the Costa de la Luz a slightly milder climate than elsewhere in Andalucia, making it perfect for a golf break in Spain. There are plenty of great options for golf holidays on the Costa de la Luz and it is now renowned as one of the most popular up-and-coming golf destinations in Spain.

One of the best places to play golf on the Costa de la Luz is Barcelo Montecastillo, which features a high-class Jack Nicklaus design that has previously hosted the Volvo Masters on the European Tour. The region also boasts the immaculate Arcos Gardens, which is fast gaining an impressive reputation for golfing excellence.

As well as spectacular sandy beaches backed by rolling dunes, the Costa de la Luz makes a good base for visiting other attractions in this part of Andalucia, such as the city of Jerez, the home of sherry, where one can see the enthralling dancing-horse show at the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, and of course indulge in a some sherry tasting!

The motor racing circuit at Jerez hosts regular motorcycle racing events and also Formula One testing sessions at certain times of the year. The Costa de la Luz can be accessed via the international airports at Malaga, Seville and Gibraltar, although many holiday makers now use the low cost airline connections offered by the airport at Jerez.
